When Fathers SUCK, A Not So Happy Fathers Day...

Father's Day is coming up soon and Wal-Mart and Walgreen's will be full of hallmark cards, electric shavers, and Belk will probably run a sale on button downs and ties-all so people can celebrate the wonderful fathers in their lives.

But what about the Fathers that suck? What about the few of us that have major daddy issues? What is out there for us? There isn't anything so, those of us that have wastes of skin

for fathers cope with the day as best we can. Some of us just ignore the day completely, some of us grieve, and some of us turn to our substitute  fathers, uncles, or step-dads and celebrate their involvement in our lives. But what if there were cards for the less than stellar dads out there? what if

while other people are out buying cards with sweet messages for their dads, we in the  Daddy Issues Club actually got to say what we would really like to say to our fathers.... I think it would sound like this...

"Thank you for always forgetting my birthday, and my graduation, oh and my wedding. I really meant alot that you weren't there...."

Conway Downtown Alive Brings Summer Thursdays Back to 3rd Ave.

Summer is here and Conway Alive is at it again, bringing summer entertainment and events, every 1st Thursday of the month June through November, downtown. It’s a really sweet idea. Almost Pollyanna like in design, a throwback to the old fashioned street festivals that used to be the highlights of people’s summers.

The flyer circulating lately gives a rundown of all the events planned and goes as follows:

BookSmith's In Conway Gets New Life!? And Other Goings On

The Former BookSmith's Building on the corner of Laurel & 3rd

I took a walk to get some lunch yesterday and stumbled onto some goings on in the downtown area of Conway. See, that’s why I have such a deep fondness for this little town of ours, all one has to do is simply

Secret Supper...? Recipes

I promised recipes a while back, I believe it was on the Secret Supper Article, so today I will share a couple of my own, and a couple that I’ve stumbled upon, tried, and tested to good results. Enjoy!

First up, dessert! For some reason I have gotten into the (bad?)

City Council Survives Tornadoes, The Grannies Get Justice, And The Smoking Ban Becomes a Ghost

All rights to this image are owned by MGM

I will have to give something to the Conway City Council, and it almost hurts me to say it but they showed some spunk Monday night. Even though Conway was being ripped by a massive sudden summer storm-complete with tornadoes- the council still carried on their meeting despite the awful weather. And, as a source confirmed,

Black Water Honey Sweets: Petit Fours!

Ever get that urge to bake something? You know, that moment when your creative confectionery side suddenly remembers just how long its been since you measured, stirred, timed, or decorating anything. And it is literally jumping up and own inside you screaming "get a recipe and get to the Food Lion NOW! " Anyone? Ok maybe not then...

Well it happens to me, and usually when my inner chef wants out its got a reason and this time its Petit Fours (small, iced cakes.) I saw petit fours for the first time

Black Water Update: Grannies to Go to City Council, Smoking Ban Missing From the Action

The Yarnbombing grannies (who have identified themselves as the “Dixie Knitters”) will get their day in council. Barbara Streeter is on the council’s agenda to present a proposal for the permission to complete Yarnbombing projects around Conway. The Black Water Honey got an exclusive look at the proposal being given to the city council and from the looks of things; the grannies have got their stuff together.

7 Things I Found/Like/Love This Week-May 8,2012

Emma Watson’s dress from the Met Costume Institute Gala. Finally, a celebrity gown worth writing about. It’s so elegant and simple, and yet interesting and fresh. Emma hit pay dirt with this one.

Chloe’s Café’s French dip sandwich and onion rings. Mmmm. I was starving and while my waist line was screaming “what are you doing!!!?!” my taste buds totally ignored it. The bread was just the right amount of crusty and soft, the meat was juicy and tender, and the onion rings were perfectly home-fried to perfection. –And I can be very judgmental about onion rings.

Dad For Dummies: How to Talk to Your Teenage Daughter

How to Talk to Your Teenage Daughter
·        Do not make speeches using symbols or metaphors such as “the flower talk”-just say it.
·
Do not be negative about a subject without giving us a reason. “ trust me” does not always suffice.
·
Don’t be afraid to say no.

Dear Me,

Dear Me at 14, I know you are probably weird-ed out by this letter just showing up out of the blue, but in time not much will surprise you anymore.

I hope that you are having a good day when you read this. I know its been rough, but you will get through this 9th grade year from hell. I m sorry about the haircut. I didn't know that puberty would decide to turn your hair into a giant frizz ball, the very minute I decided to try something new and get that short layered hairstyle. Don't use that oil treatment-you will regret it, just stick with

BWH Style: Emerson Fry

Score one  for the Yankees! While making one of my visits over to the Little Green Notebook blog, I stumbled upon a link to something awesome.

Emerson Fry is a treasure trove of fashion, photogrophy, and originality. I fell in love with their spring outfits and while the prices gave my frugal Horry County heart a bit of sticker shock, I can see that these pieces are definitly worth it.

I love the simple lines and color schemes that they used for their garments. In today's world where the more gaudy something is the more in demand (Im looking at you GaGa) it is.

But these clothes are just simply gorgeous! I mean look at the outfit to the left. Simple and feminine in design, ease of fit and motion, and boldness in just the right amount.

One of my other favorite pieces was this four button jacket. Pure elegance just drips from this beautiful thing...

I despaired at the price tag, because it will be awhile before this girl will have enough coins to be able to get her hands on this jacket. But low and behold, a found something a little more in my price range.

I am not really that big of a jewelry person, I have two or three necklaces that I trade out, but that's about it. I love simplicity but I'm also always on the hunt for something interesting and I found something to add to my interesting box  with Emerson's gold necklaces:

I just thought they were very cute. I don't always like words to be written on anything that I am going to display on my body but in this case I can make an exception.

There are six 18k gold plated coins in the collection, a lion, bird, dragonfly, clover, butterfly, and a balloon, each ranging in size from 1” diameter to .75'' diameter and each with it's own saying.

One of my favorites, the bird and sun coin (pictured left) says : "semper ad meliora"-'Always towards better things'

I don't know about $68 dollars for gold-plated anything but I would almost break my own rule a splurge on one of these despite them not being gold through and through just because.

Hey, Maybe has a mothers day gift?

Check out Emerson Fry here!

Secret Supper?....shhhhhh

There is nothing we southerners like more than a good meal and good company. Put those two together and you’ve put us in paradise. And these summer breezes blowing through the evening air have got me itching to throw something together.  After a visit to Garden and Gun’s website, one of my favorite places for inspiration, I have fallen in love with the idea of a “secret supper club” type get together.

According to the article, secret supper clubs (where chefs take gourmet multi course meals out back and serve them to a select number of guests-by invitation only-with the stipulation that the club must remain a tight lipped secret)have been popping up for quite some time all across the south. The article was older, having been published in their April/May 2009 issue, so I am sure the practice has a much larger reach by now-or maybe not- seeing as how it’s such a secret.....

So maybe it’s not really realistic to wait around on an invite into such a shindig, but that shouldn’t stop one from trying their hand at their own version! First off, you have to pick your menu: These clubs revolve around the food so that’s the most important part :) I've been craving some comfort food big time lately so my menu would consist of the following:
·

      Iron Pan Baked Meatloaf
·         Cream cheese and Garlic Red Skin Potatoes
·         Butter and Parmesan Incrusted Asparagus
·

            Garden Salad
·         French bread
·         Sweet Tea
·         And Lemon Bars
Recipes to follow :)

From there it would be time to set the scene. Secret supper clubs take all different kinds of forms. Some are hyper fancy with white tablecloths and crystal stemware, to a picnic in the middle of a field. That’s what makes this whole idea great. It’s about using whatever you have to just hang out with friends and family and eat good food.

Pick up a vintage table cloth from your local thrift store or use what you have at home. A clean sheet will do in a pinch. Besides plain white cotton is the perfect backdrop for any table setting.

Next, don’t worry about the seating. Only got four chairs but six guests are on their way? Don’t be afraid to mix and match seats. Pull up the chairs, the kitchen stool, the rocking chair from the front porch etc and neatly arrange them around your table.

Treat the table seating the same way. It’s ok to mix and match plates. It’s what gives the whole event a homey, spur of the moment feel. Ran out of glasses? Use mason jars or jelly jars instead.

Finally, put something simple as the center piece. A salvation army salvaged glass vase with a handful of wild flowers make this table a easily divine experience.

When its all done bring the pots out and bowls and serve from the table, sit back with your friends and just enjoy what a good meal can do :)
